One of the many downsides of the previous Labour government were it's policies that meant new housing developments and flats did not need to include adequate consideration of parking as part of the planning process.
The result of this policy is clearly visible in areas of the Freemantle Ward as serious issues with local parking and a lack of it for the available demand exists.
Whilst we will work hard to try and find solutions to this Labour created issue the great news is the current Government has torn up these ill thought and misplaced Labour policies and this action has enabled Southampton to once again take full charge of creating the right development for the right location with parking considerations once again addressed at a planning application level.
Your Freemantle Councillors have worked hard to introduce new parking planning standards with other Ward members that will ensure parking considerations play a more important part for future developments and these changes will help us to manage the serious issue that lack of adequate local parking provides.
Any future development will have to demonstrate within the planning application how it will meet or even exceed these new planning standards and the result of this will be no more inappropriate or ill thought schemes that do nothing to improve the lives of many of Freemantle's long standing or even newly located residents.
