September 2011
The recent publication of the provisional GCSE results from Southampton's 12 secondary schools are a reason for all of Southampton to be proud of the hard work by our students and also by our dedicated teachers and educational support staff as records have been broken at many of our schools..
The key figures to look at for benchmarking are the number of Southampton pupils that achieve at least 5 GCSE passes at grades A* to C including English and Maths GCSE grades. The really great news for Southampton is across our schools this figure has increased by 4.5% from 47.5% in 2010 to 52% this year!
What makes this years figures even more impressive is that they represent the largest year on year increase since this benchmark figure was introduced back in 2005.
By building on the good results achieved in 2010 Southampton Schools have now recorded an impressive rise of 8.9% in the number of pupils achieving 5 or more GCSE's at A* - C grades including English and Maths since 2009 when the figures stood at just 43.1% . Oasis Academy Mayfield managed the highest year on year improvement as their % jumped from a worrying 29% last year to a much improved 47% this year - with further dedication and hard work next years figures can be further improved in all our schools!
Councillor Jeremy Moulton, Southampton City Council’s cabinet member for Children’s Services and Learning and also the deputy leader of Southampton Conservatives, said of this years results:
“The GCSE results we have seen this year are hugely encouraging. Schools and colleges in Southampton have completed a clean sweep of the best ever results at GCSE, Key Stage 2, and A Level. This provides reassurance for parents that schools and colleges in the city are improving across the board and will provide the city’s children and young people with the opportunities they need and deserve.
“I offer my congratulations and to the pupils who have worked so hard to achieve these results and wish them every success in what they choose to do next.
“I’d also like to thank our fantastic headteachers for their leadership and dedication, as well as our committed and talented teaching and support staff for everything they do.
“The council will continue to work alongside the city’s schools to keep up the momentum and build on this success. We are fortunate to have some of the best headteachers in the country working within the city and this can only be good for the education of Southampton’s children and young people.”
"It is the council’s ambition to equip all our young people with the skills, knowledge and confidence to realise their aspirations and fulfill their potential. This week’s results move us closer to achieving that."
Clive Webster, Executive Director for Children’s Services and Learning, also commented with:
“These figures – and this year’s improved Key Stage 2 results – show that Southampton schools really are making great strides forward and I send my congratulations to headteachers, their staff and of course to the young people who have made this happen.
“We are all absolutely determined that Southampton should be a learning city, achieving excellence in education in all areas and that the city is increasingly seen as a place where parents want their children to be educated. As we enter the new academic year I believe we are making excellent progress towards these ambitions.”
